At Eden Camp Modern History Museum, we want everyone to enjoy discovering the sights, sounds and stories of wartime Britain. We are committed to making your visit as comfortable, enjoyable and accessible as possible.

Whether you’re visiting with a wheelchair, have mobility requirements, are bringing a pushchair or need a little extra assistance, we want to help you plan your visit with confidence.

Our museum is set within an original World War II Prisoner of War Camp, with historic huts, outdoor spaces and immersive exhibits. As a result, some areas may have uneven surfaces or other features that could affect accessibility.

Below, you’ll find useful information to help you plan your visit and make the most of your time at Eden Camp.

Getting Here and Parking

Eden Camp is located in Malton, North Yorkshire.

Our postcode for sat nav is YO17 6RT.

When you arrive, you’ll pass through our ticket gate before parking — this is all done from your vehicle, so there’s no need to get out before you’ve parked. Payments can be taken with contactless or cash.

We have 8 designated disabled parking bays which are located in the main car park, close to the gift shop. When you drive in, follow the car park round to the right and make another left.

On quieter days and when no events are taking place, visitors requiring extra space are welcome to park across two adjacent bays for easier access.

One free carer or personal assistant ticket is available for any disabled visitor who is accompanied by a carer.

All other members of your group require a purchased ticket.

Booking your tickets

You can add a free carer ticket during the online booking process when purchasing a standard or combination entry ticket. At least one full-price ticket must be in your basket to unlock the carer ticket option. Alternatively, carer tickets can also be arranged at the ticket gate on arrival.

What to bring on the day

Please bring one of the following documents as proof of carer status:

  • A letter confirming award of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), or Disability Students’ Allowance (DSA)

  • A DID card (UK Disabled ID Card) or Credibility’s Access Card with the carer/companion symbol

  • For visual impairment: a BD8 registration card or Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI)

  • An international equivalent of any of the above

Please note: a Blue Badge cannot be accepted as proof of carer status.

Getting Around the Site

Eden Camp is a flat, open-air site and the main routes between huts are all on paved surfaces. There are some gravel areas around the moat near certain huts which may be harder to navigate by wheelchair or pushchair — where possible, stick to the paved path which runs around the perimeter of the site.

The site is laid out as a loop, so you can move between huts at your own pace and skip any hut without losing your place in the route. There is no requirement to visit every hut, and staff are happy to advise on the most accessible route around the site on the day.

Most huts are accessible at ground level with no steps. Hut 3 has internal doors which may be narrow in places — if you are unsure whether this will be suitable for your needs, please ask a member of staff before entering.

Seating is available throughout the site, including benches at regular intervals and covered seating inside the Mess Hut, which is located in the centre of site.

Accessible Toilets

Two accessible toilets are available on site, one on the male side and one on the female side of the main toilet block. No RADAR key is required.

Baby changing facilities are available on the female side of the toilet block.

If you need assistance locating the accessible toilets on arrival, please ask any member of staff.

Cafe

WinStan's Bunker Café is fully accessible by wheelchair. There is space to move around the café and approach the counter, and staff are happy to assist if you need any help.

We have five highchairs available for young children.

Please note that dogs, including assistance dogs, are welcome in the outer areas of the café but are not permitted in areas where food is prepared or served. Signage is displayed throughout to make this clear.

Gift Shop

Our gift shop is fully accessible by wheelchair, with space to move around displays and approach the payment counter. The card reader can be brought to you if the counter height is a difficulty.

Assistance dogs

are welcome throughout Eden Camp. Water bowls are available on site — please ask a member of staff on arrival and they will be happy to help.

Please be aware that while dogs are welcome across most of the site, all dogs including assistance dogs are asked to remain in the outer areas of the café where food is not prepared or served. Signage is clearly displayed to show where dogs are permitted inside the café.

Wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge during your visit. We have a number of wheelchairs available and they can be collected from reception on arrival, subject to availability.

We provide wheelchairs for public use (please book before visiting, call 01653 697777. The Museum is fully accessible to all visitors.

We have disabled toilets available which have been made larger to allow for assistance however unfortunately due to the nature of our buildings, we do not have any dedicated areas for changing.

Guests with accessible needs are entitled to a free carer ticket for one personal assistant/carer who accompanies any disabled guest. All visiting guests except for the carer require a purchased ticket.

Please Note, you must be purchasing at least 1 full priced ticket in order to be able to add a carer ticket in your basket. You can reserve a free carer ticket during our booking journey when purchasing your standard or combination entry tickets.

On the day of your visit, you must produce any one of the below documentation to show proof of Carer Status Carer’s ID, proof of Carer’s

  • Entitlement to Disability Living Allowance for children under 16 or DLA/Personal Independent Payments (PIP) for those aged 16-64, either in the form of a letter stating that the benefit has been awarded, or the actual Allowance book.

  • Attendance Allowance or Carer’s Allowance letter of award

  • Incapacity Benefit books, or a letter notifying the recipient that the benefit has been awarded Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Disability Students’ Allowance (DSA), or DID card (UK Disabled ID card).

  • In the case of visual impairment, a registration card known as the BD8 or a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI)

  • Credibility’s Access Card with the carer/companion symbol

  • An International Equivalent of the Above

Yes. The huts are laid out as a suggested route but you are welcome to visit them in any order and skip any that are not suitable for you.

Hut 5 contains loud audio, sudden sound effects, smoke effects, and flashing lights. Visitors who are sensitive to any of these are advised to skip this hut. Signage is displayed outside to help you decide before entering.

Hut 3 - being the U-boat interior and having distressing imagery of divers and life on there was
hut 19 - houses a small exhibit for the holocaust 

We recommend you visit in the late afternoon sometime after 1pm. This is the usually the time when school children have left site and its more quite on the weekdays
