🥕 The Carrot’s on a StickSweet Treats from Wartime Ingenuity

(12pm – 1pm on selected days)

During the Second World War, sugar was scarce — but carrots were plentiful. In this interactive, family-friendly workshop, visitors discover how the Ministry of Food encouraged people to use carrots as a natural sweetener.

Families will explore how everyday people adapted to rationing through inventive food choices and clever substitutions. Children can then roll up their sleeves and take part in the Carrot’s on a Stick Workshop, creating their own colourful carrot snacks using syrup, sprinkles, and imagination.

This playful activity combines hands-on making, sensory history, and wartime problem-solving, helping children understand how creativity helped people get through shortages.

🥚 Propaganda Egg Art – Messages That Mattered

(12pm – 1pm on selected days)

In this creative workshop, families explore how powerful messages were communicated during wartime Britain. Inspired by iconic Ministry of Information posters, participants will decorate eggs with bold colours, slogans, and symbols drawn from real propaganda themes such as “Careless Talk Costs Lives.”

Visitors will learn how simple images and short phrases were used to influence behaviour and boost morale — then put those ideas into practice through art. The activity encourages discussion about communication, persuasion, and why messages mattered so much during the war.
