Eden Camp, the modern history museum in North Yorkshire, is proud to announce an exclusive screening of The Baby Killers: The 1914 Bombardment of Hartlepool, Whitby, and Scarborough at The McCarthy, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, on Saturday 1st March.

The powerful documentary, produced by York-based father and son filmmakers Mick and George Child and directed by Forge Photography and Film Ltd, explores the first attack of World War I to take place on British soil, and the ensuing public outrage.

The film  examines the harrowing events of 16th December 1914, when German battleships bombarded the North East coast, causing devastation in the seaside towns of Hartlepool, Whitby, and Scarborough. The attack led to significant civilian casualties and ignited a fierce response from both the British public and government, with Winston Churchill famously referring to the Germans as “the baby killers of Scarborough.”

Summer O’Brien, Collections & Engagement Manager at Eden Camp who presents the documentary said: “Presenting and helping to create this documentary has been one of the most exhilarating and heartwarming experiences I’ve had. I am beyond excited and extremely proud to share this journey, knowing it will inspire and educate future generations. It’s a story which showcases the social impact of this catastrophic event, and it’s how I came to become the historian I am today.”

The screening will take place at The McCarthy at 2.25pm and will run for one hour. Tickets start from £6, and the screening will be followed by a live Q&A session with the filmmakers.

For those wanting to learn more about WWI, Eden Camp has a hut dedicated to this conflict which immerses visitors into the trenches. Upon entering Hut 11, visitors can negotiate their way across the duck boards of the muddy trench and experience what life was like for millions of soldiers on the battlefields of Belgium and France.
