Award Winning Museum maintain 5 Stars Food Hygiene for WinStan’s Bunker Café!

Eden Camp Modern History Museum has been working hard in the past two years amongst the difficulty of Covid and staff shortages to maintain and develop the catering facilities on site. The Museum is making a strong commitment to not only hygiene and food quality but preserving the planet too.
The Directors at Eden Camp have recently invested in new equipment in the café, replacing one of the hot serveries with two large ambient chillers, catering for new audiences who want a quick snack on the go whilst maintaining some of the hot food options on the menu, such as the famous homemade proper chips!
This balance has been carefully researched and planned following Covid and suits the now reduced staff team. With difficulty of ongoing recruitment, the new menu allows for hot and cold snacks to be served in a timely manner, whilst being able to maintain the high standards of cleanliness across the facilities. Unfortunately, the traditional meals, such as steak pie and stew and dumplings are too time consuming to keep to a high standard at busy times; the demand for this type of meal in a museum setting however has decreased.
With these changes, the team have worked tirelessly to keep the fantastic standard of service and cleanliness in the museum’s café. On Friday 24th June, an Environmental Health Agent performed a spot inspection on the café, and the team is proud to announce they have been awarded another 5 stars!

A fantastic effort all around and we hope our visitors can see the effort put in to making their day out the best it can be!”
“2022 has been a year of change so far, as we have had to adapt to a different way of working since coming out of lockdown,” Catering Supervisor, Rebecca Biggins explains, “It has been a very hard couple of years for everyone, and I am so proud to be part of a such an amazing team that we can all call family.”
The 5-star rating comes just before the busy summer season truly begins and is something the museum can shout about for the thousands of tourists yet to visit in 2022. Along with this fantastic news, the museum sees other milestones in its 80th year of the camp being built. The M50 Sherman Tank “Mother” restoration has been completed and was showcased at The Tank Museum’s Tank Fest 2022 over the weekend of 25-26th June. The whole of site has had a makeover, now complete with brand new black and white signage in keeping with the 40s military aesthetic. As well as this, local joiner, P. Pearson Joinery, has designed, built, and completed a brand-new display in the form of a castle. The construction was based on old photos of castles created by POWs in the 40s and includes a pond increasing the natural wildlife on campgrounds.
Eden Camp Modern History Museum has already launched its Green Policy which includes a strategy plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. The environmental performance will be monitored across several fields including climate change, waste, and biodiversity. These directly drive their investment areas targeting efficiency enhancements, renewable energy purchase and generation, as well as waste management. The Museum aims to maximise recycling with as little waste as possible going to landfill, including using food waste (where compliant) as compost in their very own Dig for Victory Garden, and have an expanding biodiversity enhancement program across the site. The museum also looks to achieve a maximum locality of a 25-mile radius for at least 65% of suppliers, helping to reduce carbon footprint through deliveries. The café already achieves this with approximately 80% of the suppliers being with 25 miles as supporting local businesses is an important mission value of the company.
